Spring Cleaning Mistakes

Place a high importance on clean and efficient spaces for improved daily function and sanity. Beware of some all too common mistakes we make when spring cleaning that can rob us of time and efficiency.

The Mistakes:

Going in the Wrong Order

Be sure to start cleaning from the top and work your way down to the floor.  Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down after you have finished cleaning only to look up and see dust piled on the ceiling fan.

Choosing Form Over Daily Function

We all fantasize of a space that looks like the cover of a House Beautiful magazine. However, think about what you really use before Spring Cleaning your daily items into a tight corner.

Things you use on a regular basis need to be accessible, "If you make a smoothie every day, keeping the blender in a hard to reach cabinet is not very functional," says Jenkins. Being realistic about your daily regimen and the items you need to access frequently makes it easier to decide where these items should be placed to keep your space neat.

Leaving the Clutter

All the spring-cleaning tips and advice are useless if you don’t declutter first.  Make sure toys are put away, books are back on the bookshelf and paperwork is filed before you begin the cleaning process.  Otherwise, you’re leaving room for dust and pollen to hide.

“Clutter and disorganization not only rob you of your time, it can also steal your sanity and can make you feel paralyzed.”

Treating It Like a Chore

If you dread spring cleaning, this should make you feel better:  a Harvard study found those who treated cleaning as beneficial exercise saw a decrease in weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and more.  That’s what professional organizers call a trifecta:  living in a clean home, breathing allergy-free air, and feeling great!
